Foundations of Music

Group Lessons/Drum Groups

There’s no better way to learn than to play music with others regularly. Bring a drum or other instrument. We’ll practice rhythmic fluency, how to listen, when to lead/follow, improvise, and make music with others.

These personalized lessons focus on rhythm, ear training, vocal tone, instrumental lessons, improvisation, and deep listening. You will learn skills to help you bring more presence, confidence, and clarity to your music.

For artists, composers, and music producers wanting to hone their craft and strengthen their unique voice. I offer technical lessons in music production, theory, electronic music and songwriting.

  • Yes! Theses lessons are designed to meet you where you are. Whether you’ve never played an instrument or are returning after a long break, we’ll start where you are and build at your pace.

  • Absolutely. Many of my students are learning to make music for themselves, for ceremony, or for their communities.

  • I teach piano, guitar, voice, rhythm (especially hand percussion), woodwinds, and general musicianship. I also support students who are songwriters, producers, or working with non-traditional instruments.

  • Yes. These lessons are especially supportive for sound healers, facilitators, and ceremonial musicians looking to deepen their listening, rhythmic intuition, and creative confidence.

  • Yes. Every lesson is customized to your goals, experience level, and interests. Some students prefer a structured approach; others want more space to explore. Both are welcome.

  • Yes! Improvisation is a core skill at One Sound. You’ll learn how to listen, respond, and express yourself in the moment.

  • Definitely. I teach music production using DAWs like Logic Pro, Ableton, etc., and I’ll help you combine your creative ideas with a strong musical foundation.

  • Yes. I can guide you with techniques that will help unlock your creativity and reconnect you with your unique voice as an artist.

  • Lessons are typically 45 to 60 minutes. Weekly or biweekly sessions work best for most students, but I’m happy to create a schedule that fits your life.

Kip LaVie is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and music producer living in Portland, OR. His musical adventures have included studying jazz saxophone, touring in jazz, funk and rock bands, composing for video games, and leading his own band. To date he has released three full-length albums, reaching millions of listeners around the world. His teaching philosophy emphasizes foundational musical skills - ear training, deep listening, and rhythmic fluency. He believes that music serves a purpose far greater than entertainment. Music connects us to deep places within ourselves, the world, and each other. It is a powerful expression of “leela” - divine play.
